Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade

The entire Coachella Valley is known as a golf lover’s paradise, but in the town of Palm Desert, it can almost be considered a religion. In fact, the region is considered by many to be the Golf Capital of the World, and in homage of this game which has been described as “a good walk, spoiled,” the Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade has entertained and enlightened for more than five decades. The event began in the early 1960s when a group of golfing buddies decided to have a little fun with their golf carts since the desert tends to have sweltering summer temperatures too unbearable to swing the clubs. Originally, the parade was held in July or August and the theme was often Christmas in July; however, due to its popularity over the years, it is now held every October to accommodate the large crowds and the theme now changes annually.

The Main Event

Depending on the theme, parade participants showcase their elaborate, fanciful golf carts in addition to other parade favorites such as marching bands, color guard and dance squads. The parade route runs westbound down El Paseo in Palm Desert, between the streets of San Luis Rey and Ocotillo. Additionally, there is plenty of parking around El Paseo both on the streets and within store parking lots. The event is completely free to the public; however, if you wish to participate and create your very own float, there is a nominal fee. It’s definitely one of the best places in Palm Springs to golf.

All Day Activities

To kick off the day’s activities, parade visitors usually start with the morning pancake breakfast prepared by the Palm Desert Rotary Club. Afterwards, a visit to look at the silly golf carts before the judge’s expo is sure to elicit a chuckle or two. The food vendors and sponsored booths are also open for business and the kids can play in the designated area complete with a rock climbing wall, face painting booths and hands-on activities. The award ceremony for best golf cart float is given right before the parade, and if you wish to have the most optimal reserved seating, there is a fee, but it includes a box lunch.
