Palm Springs is well known for its endless options for fantastic dining, and if you’re searching for a refined menu that takes inspiration from Europe and other far flung continents, stop by Johannes in Palm Springs, an award-winning eatery that has been an essential fixture downtown for two decades!
Cultured Cuisine Fashioned from Local and Sustainable Ingredients
Executive Chef Johannes Bacher originally hails from Austria, and from an early age developed a passion for cooking that ended up taking him all over the world as he honed his culinary skills. You can see this Austrian and cosmopolitan influence reflected in the modernist décor and eclectic menu at Johannes Restaurant in Palm Springs. An important part of Chef Johannes’s menu is that he uses local, organic and sustainable ingredients as often as possible, and never sacrifices quality for cheaper, pre-processed foods. It’s a point of pride at Johannes that each menu item is made fresh every day.
Choose a seat in the warmly lit dining room and be greeted by an aroma of delicious smells drifting out from the kitchen. Indulge in a beverage from the extensive wine list that has received recognition from acclaimed sources such as Wine Spectator, or the Martini Menu that was once voted “Best Martini in Palm Springs.” For starters, you can try items such as Ahi Tuna & Avocado Tartare, with crispy wontons, horseradish, soy mustard, Austrian pumpkin seed oil. There are also European inspired delicacies like Escargot, or Cheese Spätzeln—homemade noodles sautéed in fontina and gruyere cheese, with arugula, onions, and chives.
Other than inventive entrees include selections like the Chopped Kobe Beef Steak “JäGer Style—topped with a fried egg, swiss cheese, green beans, organic mushrooms, bacon red wine sauce, fried onions, and a side of fries. You’ll really find an unusual treat in their “Schnitzel Lover’s Menu,” a showcase of the chef’s European roots, as the Wiener Schnitzel is actually one of the national dishes of Austria! With classic options like Wiener Schnitzel and Fries, and more innovative items, there’s great options to pick from. Give the Peppercorn Schnitzel a whirl, with green Madagascan peppercorn sauce, potatoes, cucumber dill cream dressing, and cranberry jelly. Or you could try Mama’s Schnitzel, with organic Roma tomatoes, gruyere and fontina cheese, cranberry jelly, and organic basil and arugula. Whichever you choose, the experience will be unlike anything else you can find in the desert!
Johannes in Palm Springs is closed Mondays, and open from 5 PM to 10 PM Sunday-Thursday, and from 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
