Sherman’s Deli & Bakery

Located on East Tahquitz Way in downtown Palm Springs, Sherman’s Deli & Bakery has served this desert community for more than five decades. It all began in 1963 when a seasoned World War II veteran named Sherman Harris opened this shop on the outskirts of a less populated Palm Springs. By 1980, Mr. Harris had more than five other restaurants around town, some of which were frequented by Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Rita Hayworth. Today, the delicatessen/restaurant is managed by his children, but the traditional recipes in the kitchen remain to the delight of thousands upon thousands of customers.

The Goods

Behind the counter, visitors will find all the traditional favorites commonly found in a delicatessen. From cured meats and gefilte fish to borscht and chopped liver, you might even be forgiven for thinking that the business resembles Barney Greengrass or Russ & Daughters back in New York. However, the difference between those venerable New York establishments and Sherman’s Deli is that the latter also provides myriad baked goods as well as a full-service restaurant.

For lunch and dinner, guests will find a massive selection of sandwiches, soups and salads, appetizers, plates and platters, deluxe meals and even a kid’s menu. Order a couple of kishkas or a knish to share alongside a piping hot bowl of matzo ball soup. For an entree, most of the selections from the deluxe dinners or chef’s specialties are excellent, but the grilled Reuben is extraordinary and it’s an exemplary version of this sandwich from Omaha, New York or Germany (depending on which origin story you believe). If you’re looking a great Palm Spring Bakery to visit, then Sherman’s Deli is definitely an option!

The Bakery

During the A.M. hours, take a walk down East Tahquitz Way in front of Sherman’s Deli & Bakery and smell the sweet aroma of baked goods wafting through the air. On the menu, guests will find cakes, pies, cheesecakes, tarts, eclairs, cream puffs and much more. The cookie menu is another reason visitors flock to Sherman’s Deli, with selections that include Maple Swirl, Lemon Walnut and Almond Cinnamon in addition to traditional favorites such as Rugelach, Hamentaschen and Linzers. Additionally, Sherman’s Deli features a cake of the month where the bakers showcase their unbelievable talent through interesting mélanges of flavor, from Orange Marmalade and Key Lime to everything in-between.

Sherman’s Deli & Bakery Has Two Spots

In addition to the original restaurant in downtown Palm Springs, there is another Sherman’s located in neighboring Palm Desert. Here, the kitchen and bakery prepare the same recipes just as it is done at the original on Tahquitz Way. Visit either establishment and get a taste of Old New York in the heart of the Coachella Valley!
